The Long Beach Community Design Center, in partnership with Cal Poly Pomona’s Urban and Regional Planning Program and the Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department, offered a series of youth urban planning and design engagement workshops called Young Community Planners of Long Beach at Silverado and Houghton Park Teen Centers in March 2024.
The workshops were led by Cal Poly Pomona Urban Planning undergraduate students and Long Beach Community Design Center staff. The primary goal of the program is to spark interest in urban planning and design among Long Beach youth and encourage them to consider pursuing education and careers in this field.
The program workshops concluded with a visit to Cal Poly Pomona and the College of Environmental Design. High school students were given the opportunity to learn about the university, student life, and attend an urban planning studio class presentation. They also participated in a scavenger hunt to familiarize themselves with urban planning terms and the academic setting. Additionally, they had the chance to interact with the campus livestock as part of the Cal Poly Pomona experience.
