Program Overview

The Urban Planning & Design Internship Program is a partnership between the Long Beach Community Design Center, The City of Long Beach Economic Development Department Pacific Gateway, and Civic Confidence to foster urban planning, design, collaboration, and civic engagement in real-world learning experiences for students interested in urban planning and design. Through a series of curated activities, events, and projects we will connect students with urban planning and design professionals, provide opportunities to learn from industry experts, gain practical skills, build meaningful connections, and prepare them for successful careers.
This is a paid  fellowship at $22 an hour for a maximum of 600 hours for the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 academic year.

  • Applicants must be between the ages of 18 - 30 years old.
  • Priority will be given to applicants who are residents of Long Beach.
  • Enrolled in a community college or a four-year university program completing an undergraduate degree, majoring in urban planning, architecture, or related fields (Geography, Sociology, Political Science, and Public Policy).

What to Expect

  • Cross-sector Collaboration: Interns will be placed across three sectors: (1) government, (2) nonprofit, (3) and private sector.

  • Guest Speakers: Industry professionals and academics will be invited to deliver lectures, and share their knowledge, experiences, and insights with interns.

  • Workshops and Seminars:  These sessions will provide interns with practical learning experiences and the opportunity to collaborate closely with experts and their peers.

  • Site Visits: Arrange visits to various design projects and initiatives in Long Beach, led by professionals and community organizations. This will enable interns to gain firsthand insights into the design process and engage directly with those involved and impacted by the projects.
  • Networking Events: These events will connect with practitioners and leaders in the industry. These events will facilitate relationship-building and exploration of potential career pathways.

  • Resume and Portfolio Development: Provide guidance and support in developing their urban planning resumes and design portfolios. Feedback will be provided to ensure it is aligned with industry and business standards.

  • Mentoring and Coaching: Cohort-based professional mentoring and coaching from government, nonprofit, and private sectors will guide interns on their projects and assignments.
