The Long Beach Community Design Center in partnership with Cal Poly Pomona’s Urban and Regional Planning Program and the Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department offered a youth urban planning and design engagement program (Young Community Planners of Long Beach) at the McBride and Houghton Park Teen Centers on March 9, 16, & 23rd 2022 at the McBride and Houghton Park Teen Centers.
The program, conducted over a 3-week period, introduced high school students from underserved areas to urban planning and design though a civic engagement project. Students identified a problem, issue, or concern that exists in their community and analyze its dimensions (i.e., socio-economic, environmental, historical, etc.) and propose potential solutions through the lens of an urban planner and designer. This exposed students to field of urban planning and design and encourage them to effect change in their community though their lived experience and activism.
Workshop instruction was provided by Cal Poly Pomona Urban Planning students and Long Beach Community Design Center. Activities included: Presentations on asset mapping; mobility/transportation; sustainability; land use; community development; hands-on interactive city model-building; and a neighborhood walking tour. An overarching goal of the engagement program is to generate interest in the field of urban planning and design and for Long Beach youth to consider it as a potential academic and career path and to continue these workshops as an ongoing program for Long Beach youth.
